For the last few months I've been working on an animation about a young Māori girl named Māia who finds an ancient flute in the forest and has a big adventure because of it. The working title is 'Taonga'.
It's going to be about 25 minutes long and because I will be doing a large amount of it myself I figured I might as well document my journey. So once I had the story laid out, I hired a scriptwriter from South Africa to fill in the details. By getting someone else who doesn't really know anything about Māori culture to write the draft script we were able to get a solid story that I was sure foreigners would understand. From there I rewrote the script placing in NZ colloquialism and more Tikanga Māori stuff.
Once the draft had been finalised I brought on a Māori translator/QA guy to translate the entire script into Māori as I wanted the animation to be Māori dubbed with English subtitles. While he was translating I spent a couple weeks coming up with character designs. Here are a few of those.
